Interesting neighborhood beautification project from Toronto
Neighborhood de-fence

I recently stumbled across this interesting neighborhood group in Toronto:
http://publicspace.ca/defence.htm

Their mission is removal of chain-link fence in the interest of neighborhood aesthetics. If someone is interested in doing something like this in our 'hood, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

I am so there!

We might consider other options too:

We used this method to decorate some of the fence on the north side of Whitworth School. It's cheap, easy, and flexible… but definitely not vandal-proof.

Chain-link fences are wonderful for growing things on. Peas, beans, annual morning glory vines (not the invasive kind), grapes, kiwis, honeysuckle, schizandra, many more. Can we think of them as opportunity?

Hey Neighbors,

Come lend a hand on a neighborhood beautification project we can all take pride in…

We're going to take out the outer layer of chain link fence along the North side of the Whitworth Playfield (along Dawson at 45th, approximately) this Saturday, starting at 10 am. The goal is to get the fencing off the poles, roll it up to be recycled, and get started digging the poles out of the ground. We'll see how far we get on Saturday — the remaining poles can get dug out some other time if we can't get finished in one day.

Want to help? The more the merrier — and the more we'll get done! We'll have coffee & bagels in the morning and pizza later in the day. Come by for half an hour, an hour, or more — before the soccer game, after the clothing swap, whenever. Kids are welcome (they can play on the playground or help if they're so inclined). If you've got tin snips, shovels, wrenches, and/or gloves, bring those along.

Call Mikala Woodward if you want to help or need more details: 722-5177 or moc.loa|3amojoj#moc.loa|3amojoj.

Thank you,

Mikala

I live in the neighborhood and was very heartened to see a bunch (if not all) of that fence removed when I walked past on Sunday morning. On behalf of the neighborhood, thanks so much to all who contributed.

But… that shiny chain link fence around the brand new environmental learning center does not appear to be temporary construction fencing. Is it possible that one new chain link fence was put up just as the community was tearing down another?

Does anyone know?

Don't get me started.

Yes, the district added a whole bunch more chain link fence over the summer, just as we were formulating our plan to get rid of this one. We're working on ways to decorate the one around the garden in front of the building — it was supposed to be something more attractive but they ran out of money — look for flowers and birds painted by kids soon. We're also hoping to remove some or all of the fence on the east side of the building (between the building and the playground) — this one they moved 18 inches west over the summer, for reasons that I could explain, but not in any way that would make any sense to anyone outside the dysfunctional bureaucracy.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped get rid of the fence. It really was wonderful to see how fast it went down! Pix & flix are here:

Cheers,
