Anonymity, participation, censorship
scottplanscottplan 1216707407|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

This thread leaves me feeling perplexed. So I'll try to sort out some impressions here.

Anonymity I'm not a big fan. When we associate our identities with our ideas, I think the discussion is more open, and the setting is just more interesting. There's an added value in getting to continue conversations in person, or in just reaching out when the keyboard is too big an obstacle for effective communication.

We've talked about this, BR. At the very least, it's helpful to know when ideas in a single discussion thread like this one are coming from the same person. Maybe it's me, but it's a lot like voices from shadows.

Participation From my perspective, the main benefit of anonymity is increased participation. But participation alone doesn't foster dialogue. There are other elements — a non-threatening setting, a friendly overall tone, and some good ideas, to name a few. As more Columbia Citizens tap in, I think there's some point when the benefits of required identities outweigh the costs. We're not there yet, but I hope to get there.

Censorship I was intentionally harsh when I called myself a censor, because it's not something I do often or take lightly. In this discussion board over the past year, I've deleted two terse comments and edited a third (you can track the edit). Aside from my megalomaniacal drive toward ultimate wiki-world domination, I was motivated mainly by my concern about tone.

It seems like a paradox that most public goods need dedicated stewards. It's true of our public spaces and institutions. People care about and participate in this forum to varying degrees. I care a lot — but I don't want that interest to come across as officious or overbearing.

Discussions here can be sparse sometimes. They happen over time. Attention shifts, and the opportunity passes for a timely response. If others were to respond in measured, even tones, then a moderator could just set back and enjoy the conversation. That would be amazing.

I don't wish to be anonymous. I created an account recently when I moved into the neighbourhood. Now when I try to login I get the following message:

Error processing the request.

You have no valid security token which is required to prevent identity theft.
Please enable cookies in your browser if you have this option disabled and reload the page.

I'm familiar enough with my browser (firefox 3) to know that cookies are enabled and that I am receiving cookies from the site - so I doubt this really is the problem. And I get the error regardless of binding my IP or not.

Any ideas why this may be happening?

Not sure. I'll check and see what I can figure out. We'll make it work.

Firefox 3 sign-in
scottplanscottplan 1216859109|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

From this post, it sounds like the error happens when Firefox 3 meets a wikidot site accessed via a custom domain. A fix might be in the works. In the meantime, Firefox 3 users, I guess it's best to access the site using that old standby, http://columbiacity.wikidot.com.

That might continue to be frustrating, because many of the site's links will keep driving you back to the (otherwise preferred) ColumbiaCitizens domain.

Hmmmm…I've been using FF3 for a while now (on multiple computers and multiple networks), and I haven't experienced any difficulties in logging in to this or another wikidot site via a custom domain. The trouble with FF (and also it's main appeal) is that it offers extensions to enhance it's usability. Of course, this means that my FF3 is not the same as another user's FF3.

I would suggest that the original poster try another browser (IE, Safari, Opera) as a troubleshooting step. That way we can determine if it's likely to be a FF3 issue.

If the issue appears to be limited to FF3, I would suggest that the poster disable any extensions he/she has installed and test again. If that works, then I would suggest re-enabling extensions one by one to determine which might be the culprit.

Of course, if the wikidot.com domain works, that might be a simpler solution.

All extensions off - firefox restarted - same error. Safari responds in step with the fox. IE7 is the only one honky-dory with the wiki. I'm running XP (sorry), what are you running their DeeJayK? I get the same error on my home network and work network.

This is a tough one. I definitely don't want to suggest that you use IE7.

I'm using both Windows XP and Mac OS X, and haven't experienced this problem. I also tried Safari (on XP) and that worked for me as well.

Let's back up a step: does the [http://columbiacity.wikidot.com] address work for you?

Um, what's wrong with IE7?

Nothing's wrong with IE7, really. I just prefer Firefox. I've gotten used to many of the features of Firefox and I have a hard time going back to IE for those times when I am forced to use it.

I am using IE7 on Windows XP SP2. I am getting the same error while saving edits to pages but only intermittantly. I have put *.wikidot.com as a trusted site. It still happens.

I see there is a lot of talk in this thread as well as others about switching to this or that browser. However, all of us don't seem to have this problem except with WikiDot. Could not the problem be with WikiDot.

Yep, me too. IE and XP and it said error for Wikidot when I tried to post earlier. This time it allowed me to put up the S. Precinct newsletter, but I did "preview" it first, don't know if this made a difference?

logging on & editing in Wikidot
scottplanscottplan 1218805282|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Some folks are having trouble logging on or saving edits. Looks like this has to do with our custom domain (ColumbiaCitizens.net) and various browser security settings.

I asked, and Michał answered. It sounds like a fix is in the works.
