Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson, Ph.D. invites parents, guardians and family members to attend a "Welcome Back" meeting for the Southeast Region, scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Aki Kurose Middle School, 3928 S. Graham St. Families will have an opportunity to meet and talk with the Superintendent, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Susan Enfield, Southeast Region Executive Director for Schools Michael Tolley and representatives of the region's schools.

The Sept. 28 meeting is part of the Superintendent's engagement plan for 2010-2011, which focuses on the theme of Listening, Learning, and Responding. A brief presentation will be given by the leadership team that will welcome everyone to the new school year and describe the new regional structure. The majority of the meeting will be devoted to informal interactions between families and district and school leaders.

"Our new regional structure will strengthen connections and pathways between schools, which will benefit students as they move through the grade levels," said Dr. Goodloe-Johnson. "These regional meetings provide an opportunity for me and my staff to listen to ideas and concerns as we strive to ensure excellence for every student. I also hope that the meetings serve to strengthen connections between schools and families in the region. I look forward to listening and learning at each of these gatherings."

The Southeast Region includes the following schools: STEM@Cleveland, Rainier Beach, Interagency and South Lake high schools; Aki Kurose and Mercer middle schools; ORCA and South Shore K-8 schools; and Beacon Hill International, Dearborn Park, Dunlap, Emerson, Graham Hill, Hawthorne, Kimball, Maple, Martin Luther King Jr., Van Asselt and Wing Luke elementary schools.

Interpretation services will be provided in Amharic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tigrigna and Vietnamese. Light refreshments will be served. Childcare will not be available, but books, drawing and coloring supplies will be provided.

The regional structure, effective this fall in Seattle Public Schools, groups schools into one of five regions. Each region is supervised by an Executive Director of Schools, who has responsibility to oversee schools and to support principals and staff in providing excellent instruction in every classroom.
