On Saturday, November 12, Rainier Valley Cultural Center presents Encounter Ireland, the third event of our Arts Gumbo 2011 Series. Encounter Ireland runs from 5 – 9pm and features Celtic music group Ockham's Razor & Guests. Also on the bill are Sam Nicols, Irish Stepdancer; an instrumental music & dance workshop and Irish cuisine. Encounter Ireland takes place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center (RVCC), 3515 S Alaska St in Columbia City.

The evening will begin at 5 pm with a performance by Seattle based Celtic music group Ockham's Razor followed by a dance performance by Sam Nicols, who performed with the North American Touring Company of Riverdance, followed by an audience dance-along. Ockham's Razor will perform a second short set along with a participatory audience experience onstage teaching some Irish tunes and instrumentation. Ockham's Razor will close the performances with a final set at 6:30 pm. An array of Irish snacks will be available after the performances.

Ockham's Razor is a Seattle-based Celtic rock band that blends rock, pop, gypsy, punk, classical, bluegrass, Tin Pan Alley, and techno influences with Irish/Celtic roots and has carved out a unique niche in the Celtic rock genre. Since 2006, Ockham's Razor has performed with such notable bands as The Chieftains, Young Dubliners, Enter the Haggis and the Paperboys. Their music has been played on radio stations and podcasts throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, Australia and Germany and the band has been featured on television shows such as "PDXposed" and "Next Stop".

Sam Nicols is a professional dancer and performer. In 2002, he ranked 15th in the world, 2nd in North America and 1st in the Western US in Senior Men's Competition. He performed with the North American Touring Company of Riverdance (2003-2005) and with the Chieftains in Seattle (2000-2001). Nicols studied with Comerford School of Irish Dance for 10 years under Master Teacher Tony Comerford.
