Volunteers Needed for Citizen Science GSP Forest Monitoring
Join Green City Partnership, EarthCorps and a growing community of volunteers to collect scientific data about our region’s urban forests. No experience is necessary, volunteers will attend 1 introductory training and commit to establishing at least 2 monitoring plots in local parks (but more is encouraged!) between June and October, 2012.
Seattle, WA (June 8, 2012) - The Green Seattle Partnership Forest Monitoring Team is a collaborative effort between Seattle Parks and Recreation, EarthCorps and volunteers like you. Join a growing community of volunteers in the Forest Monitoring Teams third year to collect valuable data in Seattle’s 2,500 acre urban forest, while learning about forest ecology and plant identification.
The first opportunities to participate in an introductory training will be Wednesday, June 20th, 5:30-9pm at Magnuson Park or Wednesday, June 27th, 5:30-9pm at Pritchard Island Beach Park. This will include a background into forest monitoring, an overview of the monitoring protocols and a field exercise to learn the tools and methodology of collecting data. Monitoring efforts occur May- October, and we ask that you just commit to assisting with two plots throughout this field season (although more is encouraged!). All equipment, site locations and any additional support are provided by the Program Coordinator. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn, explore and have fun.
The Green Seattle Partnership Forest Monitoring Team started in 2010 with 15 volunteers and 30 plots in 20 parks. It grew in 2011 to 35 volunteers, over 120 plots in 40 parks. In 2012 we plan to continue the momentum in Seattle by welcoming back returning volunteers while recruiting new volunteers and returning to 2011 plots while installing new plots.
