Hope, Anger, and Courage: Faithful Witness in a World of Climate Change with Dr. Kevin O'Brien and Dr. Brian Naasz of Pacific Lutheran University

Thursday, Oct 4, 2012, 7-8:30pm, Columbia City Church of Hope, 3818 South Angeline Street

Using contemporary debates about natural gas fracking and coal export as examples, a chemist and a Christian ethicist will present their perspectives on what it will take to nurture the environmental movement in Francis' spirit.

They will focus on three vital Christian virtues: hope that God's world can be better, anger at the forces that prevent it from improving, and courage to work faithfully towards a brighter future. With hope, anger, and courage, the environmental movement can continue to respond thoughtfully, effectively, and faithfully to the challenges facing our world today.

St. Francis is widely accepted as the patron saint of the environmental movement because of his deep love for all creatures and his profound awareness of God's creation. Francis is also a model because he created an enduring social movement: in the face of an increasingly complicated society, he founded an order dedicated to simple living and service that continues today.
