George's Story

George Bunting joined the Marine Corps after high school and was part of Desert Storm in Iraq in 1991. He received an honorable discharge in 1992 and moved to Washington state, where he worked as a restaurant manager, crane operator, and truck driver. George got married and moved to Seattle, but after five years, his marriage ended, and he encountered financial and legal troubles.

Veteran and LIHI Resident George Bunting talks about how his experience with homelessness and how stable housing has changed his life.

"I wound up in jail and lost everything," George recalled. After getting out, George found himself homeless.

After a year living on the streets and moving between temporary housing, George learned of an opening at LIHI's McDermott Place, which has 38 apartments specifically designated for Veterans. He moved into his own studio apartment there in 2010. On top of now having a new home, he found his apartment fully furnished with a bed, table, chairs, refrigerator, kitchen range, bathroom, and a basket with toiletries, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies and food. He was thrilled.

"I'm still getting used to the fact of me being in my own spot, not under everybody's eyes. But so far, I'm loving it." George also receives ongoing counseling and support services.
