Columbia City Farmers Market

This Wednesday Sept 17 the Farmers Market hosts a cooking demo by Chef Garret Brown of Verve Wine Bar! Verve features a lovely gourmet menu with local meats, cheeses and seasonal greens… Come watch as a master chef shows shoppers how to create delicious and affordable dishes using what's fresh on the market tables now. Demo starts at 4 pm.

We're starting to see some winter squashes on the market tables along with the bounty of peak summer: eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, plums and apples. September is also a great time to enjoy the last of sumer's salads, with plenty of fresh lettuces and delicious summer fruit (the best summer salad: add a sliced nectarine and a simple vinaigrette to your greens and maybe a sprinkle of market cheese).

Great fun for the whole family. This may be the last such dance for a while, unless someone steps forward to help run it. A glimpse of Absolute, a Southside icon

flickr:2857267302

(from the Citizens flickr pool)

On a Sunday along MLK, you can expect to see Absolute, the Rastafarian runner with the Ethiopian flag as his cape. Here is my glimpse of him today at Rainier Vista. Voilà, a link to a fine Seattle Times article about him, excerpted below:

"Bob Marley!" some of the workers yell at him, this black man, 6 foot 3, all limbs and graying dreadlocks. "Superman!" some of the kids holler, loving the sight of a man running in long white socks and the green-yellow-red flag of Ethiopia fashioned as cape.

The runner was born with a different name, but sometime after college, after he claimed Ethiopia as The Motherland and decided to boycott all meat and dairy, his buddies dubbed him "Absolute." End of story. Don't look for deeper meaning into why Absolute runs MLK, down to the corner of Graham Street where the McDonald's presides and where he pauses, thrusting his hands in the air à la Rocky Balboa, then turns back, heading north.

Columbia City in the blogossiphere

Amber at the Rainier Valley Post says she doesn't want direct links from the Wikli's blogossiphere over her concern that gossip just isn't her brand. We still encourage you to check out her blog.
