Columbia City Farmers Market

This Wednesday at the Farmers Market, check out the fresh salsa at Billy's stand (made from their own organic tomatoes, peppers, garlic and herbs), plus their fresh roasted peppers; fresh shelled canellini beans from Stoney Plains Farm; dozens of potato varieties from Olsen Farm; plus more apples, pears and winter squashes on the market tables.

The market is only open two more weeks — so now's a good time to stock up for winter (one idea: make a hearty vegetable soup with plenty of greens, freeze it in large jam jars in your freezer…and just thaw, heat and serve in January when you're craving a taste of market bounty). You can also stock your freezer with delicious salmon fillets from Loki Fish; goat, lamb and beef from Toboton and Olsen Farms; and chicken from Stokesberry Farm.

Next week: Pumpkin Decorating for kids! The market supplies the pumpkins, paint, glue, feathers, glitter and other decorations — just bring your imagination and make a beautiful or scary pumpkin for Halloween.

New to Columbia City: Listening Mothers

Starting on Friday, October 17, Listening Mothers will begin a group at Seattle Home Maternity Service (map).

Listening Mothers is a small group for moms with babies 0-6 months of age. It's an opportunity to connect with other moms in a safe and supportive environment with a trained facilitator to learn about the emotional development of babies, as well as the rich and sometimes intense emotional experience as a mom. This group will meet from 2-3:30 PM on Fridays for 8 sessions. For more information about this valuable program, you can check out their website or e-mail me at moc.liamg|oerbma#moc.liamg|oerbma.

If you or someone you know has had a baby in the last six months, please spread the word. We welcome the opportunity to help parents and children deepen their relationship, come to know themselves and their babies better, and find more confidence in their own native parenting wisdom.

Columbia City Community Council

Concerned about crime? So is Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess. On Monday, October 20th at 6:15 pm at the Columbia City Library, Councilman Burgess will give a presentation on the Safer Streets Initiative. South Seattle has been hit particularly hard by an increase in violent crime. Come to the meeting and let the city know you're ready for some results! Bring your neighbors, everyone welcome.

Dog-o-ween at Genesee Park

Dog-o-ween is the most important fundraising event for Citizens for Off-Leash Areas. We'll hold it this year on Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 11am-2pm at the Genesee Park off-leash area. There will be fun, food, and fashion galore with prizes, raffles, and vendor booths catering to every pampered pet. The grand finale is a costume contest where all the most creatively dressed pooches strut their stuff for celebrity judges to win great prizes!

Please take a moment to download our 2008 Dog-O-Ween Information Packet at www.dogoween.org.

Columbia City in the blogossiphere

Amber at the Rainier Valley Post says she doesn't want direct links from the Wikli's blogossiphere over her concern that gossip just isn't her brand. We still encourage you to check out her blog.
