Columbia City Cinema

Seattle's Coolest Neighborhood Theater

We're looking forward to going where no man has gone before this week, backward to the beginning of Star Trek Nation and the first voyage of the Starship Enterprise as Star Trek, the prequel, docks this Friday at the cinema. Everyone is invited to take the checkout cruise. No one thought Star Trek would sail on forever either, but it sure has, becoming part of our national consciousness on the way. You gotta be there. There will be a gala 9:30 opening of Star Trek, Thursday night, 4/7.

Docking at adjacent berths are The Soloist and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The sweet little Cleaning ends Thursday, May 7.

On Facebook? Join the Columbia City Cinema group. Just another great way to stay on top of all that’s happening at Seattle’s Coolest Neighborhood Cinema.

See you at the movies.

Invite us all to your sustainable garden:

Formerly known as the Columbia City Garden Tour, this year we're celebrating sustainability in the diverse gardens of the Rainier Valley. Thus the name has changed to the Rainier Valley Garden Tour.

Please let us know if you'd like to show off your pride and joy in the Garden Tour. To submit your garden for consideration, send an email to [*gro.ruoTnedraGyellaVreiniaR|snoissimbus#gro.ruoTnedraGyellaVreiniaR|snoissimbus submissions @RainierValleyGardenTour.org] by 11am May 15.

We'll hold the tour on Saturday, August 22 and will include gardens from Martin Luther King Way east to Lake Washington, and I-90 south to the city limits.

What does "sustainable" mean to you in your garden? From worm bins and organic veggies, from community enrichment to personal enjoyment, from natives to site-appropriate exotics, tell us why your garden is sustainable and why you want to share it with others.

volunteer, May 16 & 17 food drive

Hi neighbors — I'm rounding up volunteers for a food drive to benefit the clients of Rainier Valley Food Bank. This has proven to be a great family activity — even kids as young as 5 years old enjoy helping out (especially the more outgoing kids). Please contact me if you're interested in helping.

Where: Safeway, located at 3820 Rainier Ave S
When: Sat May 16 & Sun May 17 from 10 am–4 pm

What volunteering looks like: Volunteer shifts are two hours long. During this time, you will pass out flyers to people entering the store (the flyers contain a grocery list with our most needed items). Some people will purchase items inside the store and drop them off with you. You give them a warm thank you and a smile and pack the groceries into the containers provided by RVFB.

unleashing creativity

A New Generation of Compassionate and Creative People

Arts In Motion, the Rainier Valley's first and only Community School of the Arts, engaged the community with a creative fundraising event called the Create-A-Thon, culminating in an artistic flurry of activity at AIM on Sunday Mar. 22, with over 30 students participating.

Students gathered pledges from family, friends, and neighbors to raise funds for this year's student scholarships. A true community event, the Create-A-Thon involved faculty, parents and volunteers donating over 50 hours of their creative energy. Local businesses donated prizes, parents brought snacks and the AIM Teen Leaders guided and mentored younger students.

Columbia City in the news

You'll find similar attitudes at venues all over Seattle. Chris Cottingham, who owns the Columbia City Theater, says they're not too worried about the disease, but they are cleaning a bit more carefully these days, disinfecting microphones, posting signs about sneezing, and even providing hand sanitizer at the bar counter.

… That's the news.

Columbia City in the blogossiphere

Amber at the Rainier Valley Post says she doesn't want direct links from the Wikli's blogossiphere over her concern that gossip just isn't her brand. We still encourage you to check out her blog.
