Columbia City Cinema

Seattle's Coolest Neighborhood Theater

The penultimate Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, opens this week at the cinema and by all accounts it's the best Potter yet.

Public Enemies and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, both doing well, will continue another week.

Be sure to check our website for the most up-to-date movie information! Or, better yet, sign up for our weekly newsletter and get movie times delivered straight to your inbox.

See you at the movies.

Mount Baker Lakewood Soccer

We are in serious need of some girls to join our U11 Mt Baker league girls soccer team (The Superstars!) otherwise we will be forced to split up! We lost some of our girls to other sports and select soccer this year. We are a team with the MT Baker-Lakewood Soccer Club (mblsoccer.org).

The Superstars are a group of south end girls (and parents) who have a lot of fun and success playing soccer. We have managed that great balance of having fun (no screaming coaches, over-bearing parents or stressed out girls) and still learning skills and winning games. (We won all our games this spring!!)

Your daughter does not have to have played soccer before… we welcome all skill levels!

Heritage Parade and Summer Streets Festival

Just one month until the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade and Summer Streets Festival! Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 8. Rainier Ave will be open to pedestrians from Orcas to Alaska Streets.

The parade is 11-12 followed by the festival from 12-3.

Rainier Ave will be sectioned off for different festival activities. Beginning in Hillman City and traveling north the sections will be: Fitness St, Health & Beauty St., Art St, Sustainable St, Music St and Restaurant Row will be in Columbia City. Want to participate in one of these activities? Let me know ASAP! moc.rebmahcreiniar|liam#moc.rebmahcreiniar|liam

And — don't forget the parade — we have wonderful entrants this year — and would love to make it even better than last year! If you want to join the fun: www.rainierchamber.com for parade application and contract. Deadline: July 24th.

Parade entrants can schedule a demonstration of their talent during the festival. Again, contact me to get that set up.

Car-free Day: August 8, 11am-3pm

We all had so much fun at last year's car-free day, and anyone looking for that event might not know that it's been rolled into the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade and Festival.

Rainier Ave will be closed from 11am - 3pm from S Alaska Street down to S Orcas Street, same as last year. The parade will run from 11am - 12pm, and then the City is partnering with the Rainier Chamber to host the car-free day. The Bite of the Valley won't happen, but they're hoping local businesses will offer food and activities out on the street.

The biggest change from last year is that they're trying to organize activities by type along Rainier. For example, they'll have fitness activities in one area, art activities in another, music in another, etc. While this takes away a little bit of the wonderful "anarchy" of last year, and the surprise activities that popped up here and there, everyone's welcome to participate in this do-it-yourself street party.

Anyone wanting more info, or help planning your own renegade activity, should contact the Rainier Chamber: moc.rebmahcreiniar|liam#moc.rebmahcreiniar|liam

Columbia City in the blogossiphere

Amber at the Rainier Valley Post says she doesn't want direct links from the Wikli's blogossiphere over her concern that gossip just isn't her brand. We still encourage you to check out her blog.
