Columbia City Farmers Market

Save summer for winter now! It's prime time to can and pickle. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries will be coming to an end in the next few weeks. Nectarines are at their peak and the white peaches have made their appearance. Pickling cukes are in, along with sweet corn, and sweet and hot peppers for salsas and relishes. Over the next few weeks, look for more varieties of pears and apples!

This week's event: The Annual Zucchini 500 Races! Kids can build and race their own car made from a zucchini. This event is a hit every year, and "cars" are only available until they're gone! Event runs 3-6pm.

See you at the market!

the neighborhood brunch crunch

For years, neighbors have gotten together each month to share news and some laughs over a good meal. It's a fun neighborhood tradition, and a relaxed way to connect and get to know each other better.

Our brunch-o-meter is now near empty! We need gracious hosts. November and beyond are available for you to share this longstanding neighborhood tradition. If you're interested or would like to know more, please contact me (email, or 329-5912) — or go ahead and sign yourself up on the brunch page. Thanks.

film screening to support breast cancer research

Please join me to view a documentary called In The Family. The film is slated to premier on October 1 but we'll be offering two special screenings at the Columbia City Cinema on September 16, 6 and 8:30pm.

I'm coordinating this screening to raise money for Areola Borealis, a team who just completed the Breast Cancer 3-Day. I walked last year but can't get my hooves in order this year, so here's a chance to support the cause.

Seward Park play area open house and fundraiser
Thursday, Sept 24, from 6-8 P.M. (Open house format with two formal presentations at 6:30 & 7:30)
Seward Park Environmental and Audubon Center — Refreshments provided, children welcome

Please join us to see the final plans for a cool new play area and learn how you can help get it built by June 2010!

Breathe easier — quit smoking!

The Community Acupuncture Project of Columbia City, located at 3811B S Ferdinand, has been busy treating people in the community on a daily basis to help them quit smoking this summer. Our deal has been so successful that we have decided to extend the offer until the end of October. The offer includes unlimited acupuncture each week for a fixed fee of $30-$50 sliding scale per week.

Acupuncture is most successful when applied frequently at times of emotional and physical stress or transition. This is the mission of our clinic — to provide as many treatments as necessary to get people well, at a cost that is accessible to all of our community.

Give us a call to talk about what we do 760-6064 or visit our website. You can make an appointment there too. If it's your time to quit, consider acupuncture!

Habitat for Humanity at Rainier Vista

Habitat for Humanity is hosting King County's first annual Build-a-Thon! Much like a Walk-a-Thon, the Habitat Build-a-Thon asks volunteers to engage friends and family in making affordable housing a priority by sponsoring their volunteer hours for Habitat. Why walk when you can build?
