Bring it on down

A large segment of our food purchases at Rainier Valley Food Bank (4205 Rainier Ave S) are fresh fruits and vegetables. This is where you, dear neighbors, can get involved.

Got a garden with extra vegetables or herbs? Bring it on down! Got a fruit tree laden with more fruit than you could eat all year going ripe on the branch? Bring it on down! If you don't currently have surplus food in your yard or garden, consider planting an extra row for the food bank. We are always happy to accept fresh produce grown locally. You can always count on your donation going to a worthy belly, and feel great about feeding your own community. It could be the most important trip of your week!

RVCC Survey

The Rainier Valley Cultural Center (RVCC) constantly strives to serve you, our patrons and supporters. To do so, we need to better understand how you currently use RVCC and what additional programming would best suit your interests.

We would be very grateful if you could take the 5 minutes needed to complete this online suvery. Your input will help guide our future. You can choose to enter a drawing for two free tickets to Arts Gumbo 2010!

Here's the survey.

Ryan Purcell at the Columbia City Theater

Longtime Columbia City resident, Ryan Purcell and his band the Last Round, will be playing this Friday the 23rd at the Columbia City Theater opening for Star Anna. Come on out and support the opening of this great new club and support a (very) local musician while you're at it.

You may have seen us playing at the Ferdinand street block party last year, or me sitting in with the Dusty 45's at the Americus Block party — this year we are playing the best new club to open in Seattle since the reopening of the Croc — and it's in our own neighborhood!

Volunteer Chore Services

Volunteer Chore Services, a program of Catholic Community Services, is a "safety net" for elders and adults living with disabilities who are unable or ineligible for state/paid chore services. All recipients are low-income, have health problems or difficulty with mobility, and most live alone.

A growing volunteer opportunity in your neighborhood consists of driving clients to doctor appointments, grocery shopping or other chores. We carefully match volunteers to opportunities based on their personalities, neighborhood, and preferences.

Wagon Queen Truckster @ the Shirley Marvin Hotel

If you remember the 1980s "National Lampoon Vacation" movie starring Chevy Chase, you will remember the Wagon Queen Truckster. Well, it'll be parked outside The Shirley Marvin Hotel in Columbia City during the weekend of Friday, July 30th through Sunday, August 1st. HomeAway.com has chosen The Shirley Marvin Hotel to be part of the grand tour of the Truckster around the U.S.A. And for a tour of The Shirley Marvin click here: [http://shirleymarvin.com]

HomeAway.com has created a mini-film as a reprise of the the original movie reuniting Chase with Beverly d'Angelo as The Griswolds. Check them out.

We hope the truckies and travel blogger, Jennifer Miner get a great Columbia City Welcome. More info to follow next week.

Wellspring FS Launches “Kids Helping Kids” Coin Drive

Rainier Beach 6-year-old Rena Mateja has been collecting pennies to "help homeless" babies for three years. On April 27, 2010, she surpassed her goal of $500!

Musician Caspar Babypants (aka Chris Ballew of The Presidents of U.S.A.) was inspired by Rena's generosity, and so he wrote the song Happy Heart for her. And he wants to do the same for one lucky kid who follows her example to selflessness and service.

Wellspring Family Services has launched a "Kids Helping Kids" coin drive, and you can catch up with Caspar Babypants and the "Kids Helping Kids" booth at the Columbia City Farmer's Market on Wednesday, July 21st from 3pm – 5pm.
