Arts Gumbo: Experience EthiopiaOn Saturday, October 8 Rainier Valley Cultural Center presents Experience Ethiopia, the second event of our Arts Gumbo 2011 series. Starting at 2 pm, Experience Ethiopia features national and regional performance groups, Ethiopian food demonstrations, a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a youth dance competition and a catered dinner. Experience Ethiopia takes place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center (RVCC), 3515 S. Alaska St. in Columbia City and is co-presented by RVCC and Salon Ethiopia.

Valley Vibes jazz concertValley Vibes Concert and Conversation features two outstanding regional jazz groups led by women musicians on Friday, October 14 at 7pm. Correo Aéreo will open the concert, followed by headliner Elspeth Savani. We'll hold the concert at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center as a free event (donations welcome). Following the concert, we invite audiences to join the artists in a conversation (topic: Women in Jazz; Breaking the Glass Ceiling) with a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception.

Vets & soldiers speak out against warAn event marking the 10th anniversary of the US incursion into Afghanistan. Army Reservist LeAnna Waldbauer, who has served in Iraq, Navy veteran and labor organizer Steve Hoffman, and Gulf War conscientious objector Warren Davis will examine the human and economic costs of U.S. military actions, including the rise of anti-war sentiment and suicide rates among the troops. We welcome back Ivan & Alyosha, burlesque & Betsy OlsonWe've got a busy week ahead of us at Columbia City Theater. Thursday we've got Betsy Olson, joined by Sera Cahoone on drums and Cahoone's old bandmate from Carissa's Wierd, Jenn Ghetto will be opening the evening with a solo set of sad songs. Friday we welcome Ivan & Alyosha back to our stage and back home after a long tour. Their last visit here they sold the place out and they're on their way to doing it again. Saturday we're bringing burlesque back to the theater and Blvd Park will wrap up your weekend nicely come Sunday.
